An account of a weights-lifter at our gym

The following is a reflection & findings of a weight lifter at Golden Gloves Fitness:

I have been lifting weights since 2016 for about 5-6 times per week. In other words, barely missing a day. Usually doing the bench-press and lifting heavy dumbbells. The other day I went to Golden Gloves Fitness in Vaughan to hit the bag and was shocked that I did not have as much as power as I expected. The results really did fall far from my expectations.

What I found was that during the last couple years I accumulated a lot of muscle but not enough stamina. A lot of curves but not enough strength. And most of all, I really did not feel like I was dense enough. Why is that? It only took me until the next day to find out. The answer is: impact. There was not enough of  'impact' being sent back to my muscles & bones when I lift weights. I pumped them, sure. But, I did not use them as a skill or technique.

Boxing really did made me realize that density is super important for power. You don't want to be only bloated with muscles but you also want them to be stronger and resistant rather than just having a 'cotton-candy' body. Thankfully; hitting bags, pads and practicing punches with a partner allowed me to become stronger. The next day, my bones felt denser, my muscles felt more compact and, yes, I had that good muscle 'ache' feel that really do send the signal of progress to yourself and your body.

I also found my respiratory system improved substantially just from a single day at this boxing gym! Now, I did not do much treadmill or running before. I strictly stretched and did weights. When I first came to Golden Gloves, I was out of breath after a couple rounds! I don't smoke but at the same time my running was left to a minimum throughout the years. I was left out of breath after the first round and after the second round I was really starting to feel winded. This has led me to think that lifting weights does not have that much impact on breathing. Luckily, boxing really does get your breathing going and afterwards you feel great! It is a shock how fast boxing makes respiratory system work. No wonder those boxers are so fast with their hands & feet and can last so long in the ring!

Finally, I am that guy who needs a lot of work before breaking a sweat. At the gym when I was lifting weights, it sometimes took me 20 minutes to be drenched in sweat and sometimes I barely broke a sweat at all. However, when I was boxing, I broke a sweat within 10 minutes! And, I mean that real sweat. That potent , fully drenched from head to toe sweat. I couldn't of been happier because once you break that first sweat the time flies and you know you are going to benefit from your workout the next day.

This is my take and experience when comparing boxing to weight lifting and I hope this insight will benefit you too. I really do recommend to mix lifting and boxing together just to see how hard you can punch that bag. However, doing weights alone felt like it was a cause without an effect. After this experience, I am definitely going to mix the two up from now on and I will surely follow up on my progress later. As always stay fit and looking for ways to better yourself! Until next time, I wish you all the best in your body building progress.

How do I know when my workout is done?

How do I know when my workout is done? This is a huge question at Golden Gloves Fitness and is very common. Shortly put, your work out is done when you're covered in that thin layer of sweat over the majority of your body. You don't exactly have to be soaked but pretty much wet; this is when you know you have made progress in your workout. Before that it is just a stretch or even worse: nothing.

So how do you avoid an unproductive workout? There two factors that come into play in order to make your workout complete. The first, it is time. Anything under 20 minutes simply won't work. After 20 minutes, you have invested enough time for you to be at least covered in sweat. If you are not, you are being too slow or you are doing something wrong. By the 20 minute mark, you should be well into your workout.

We recommend having at least 40 minute to 1 hour workouts, so just add another 20 minutes to that 20 minute mark and your workout all of the sudden feels more complete. The other factor that makes you sweat inside a gym is friction. The more you repeat a movement, the more friction there is between your muscles that lead to sweat. So if you find yourself not sweating enough, you might be simply moving too slow. Speed up your movement with your hands and feet, move your whole body, just don't stop! Remember: it is than thin layer of sweat that send the signal to your body to start forming!

Finally, you just know when your workout is done within your body's intuition or how we like to put it at our gym in Vaughan; behind the science of your body. You don't feel stiff like 'wood' anymore. A common complaint at our gym is my legs feel "stiff" like "wood". The reason for this being is not enough blood flow going to your legs or the stuff/ numb part of your body. Work that part out and warm up, this feeling should go away and when it does & you feel flexible; this is when you know you have progressed well into your workout.

At Golden Gloves Fitness, we understand that everybody is different and how important it is to work with people based on their body's needs. You cannot have the same approach to everyone because we all are different. We make sure that we work your way up based on your capabilities so that you make progress and there is never a dull day. We also put a positive, fun twist into our workout sessions so that you step out of the gym feeling that you have truly progressed. If you want to improve your body and enjoy it at the same time, please do not hesitate to contact us today to hear how we can workout a better you so that you can have a better body.

There is Boxing and then there is everything else

Being focused and avoiding distractions is the main topic of today here at our gym in Vaughan. Over here we like to separate everything from our paramount goals and that is: becoming the best and the fittest. But, how do we do that? That is the prize question. The biggest obstacle that most people face that we notice is their thoughts. Such as: “I can’t”, “I don’t want to”, or “I rather have a _____ (insert your delight)”. These types of thoughts are the ones that keeps people from being all the best they can be.

“I rather have a donut because it feels good”. Well, guess what? Being fit feels even better! You get
endorphins, hormones and positive energy pumping through your body and if it is done right there is only positive impacts to it when being compared to sugary stuff or any other bad habit. At our gym, we make sure that you do your training right; our coach Alex has a keen eye for this and avoid redundant exercising at all costs. Finally, boxing really does get your body & circulation pumping so that you do reap the benefits of being active. Simply make it a part of your life.

“I can’t”. You are saying this because you are mixing fitness/ boxing with other unrelated situations. You got to separate & isolate working-out from everything else and you will feel much better. If you still find yourself struggling to get to the gym simply say this to yourself: “this is me, it is a part of my life”. Or, formulate sayings that work best for you. This leads to our next philosophy; at our gym we feel out what works best for YOU! Our programs are custom tailored for specifically your body. We understand that everybody is different, with a different learning curve and that is why we make sure that we progress with you to higher fitness levels.

“I don’t want to” is another one of the most common sayings when it comes to training. We hear this so much that we are tired of it also, but we also observed that once people begin exercising and break that first sweat; they right away want more! We cannot stress this enough. Stress what? The once you break that first sweat everything changes saying. And, after you do get sweaty, you really do think that there is boxing and then there is everything else; you literally put everything aside and start saying “it can wait until I am done working-out” instead. Indeed, the tables do turn around quickly once you have the right mentality and we are dedicated to help you do that; you will be back for more & more, our guarantee!

We just want to go back to our programs and how things function here at our gym. We first assess your level of fitness/ boxing and then we take it from there. We provide you with all the tools & knowledge that you need to be successful in your bodybuilding process. That’s right, we really do have that personal approach to each & every person that comes through out doors because we are more than just a gym we are wellness, health and fitness center for anybody who wishes to improve their life.

If you are interested in our boxing and/or fitness programs, contact us today to hear how we can help you become all the best that you can be. We are always looking forward to being in touch with you and to be here for you every step of the way. We are located just north of Toronto and we are dedicated to being your to go to stop for fitness and overall wellbeing. And, as always, stay tuned for more information on boxing/ fitness related news, info, and advice from Golden Gloves Fitness & staying fit!

Working-out as an adventure

The most common drawback people face when it comes to working-out is lack of excitement or interest in the hard work that involves in training. This lack of enthusiasm usually exists before exercising and, all of the sudden, there is a lot of sensation for training after the workout session. The reason for that being is: energy bursts. When the body is cold, it is hard for it to be excited for large scale movements. But, once it is all warmed up, all perspectives about exercising change. How can we remain excited for the gym at all times? This is what we are going to discuss today's post.

There are many tools at your disposal to make fitness a part of your life. You just simply haven't prepared them. First of all, your biggest obstacle is your thoughts: "ooh it is so hard to get to the gym", how about, try this: "the gym is my temple, my refuge, a place where I get to know my body better". This type of train of thoughts really brings out excitement for training and it really makes working-out an adventure. Stay ambitious, my friends.

After having the right mind frame, there is no telling how far you can go. You will quickly realize limits are set for yourself, by yourself. Now that you are thinking right, set up stations and be curious about how these 'stations' will develop your muscles. What are stations? For example; one spot is skipping rope, one spot is a bag and one is weights. Clock them in at 3 minute rounds and switch them up and like this you have stations set up. But, remember, when you approach these stations, to remain curious about how they work with the physiology of your muscles. If you don't see the results that you are looking for; switch your stations to other activities right away!

Progress is key. You can't stay motivated without seeing results. Those big & dense muscles is the prize & the end goal! Without the reward of strength, there is no point. Record your progress diligently and highlight the areas of your body that need work. You can do it mentally (if you have a good memory) or physically by writing it down on paper. The main point is for you to realize, actualize & materialize your goals of transforming your body to all the best it can be.

Lastly; be comfortable. This is last but not least of importance. Let's face it you can't workout well in uncomfortable pants or shoes or in an unwelcoming atmosphere. You want a positive, can-do & fun gym. Play good music, buy a new pair of running shoes and follow your favorite athletes. You being immersed in the world of fitness makes it so much easier for you to make it a part of your life. The difference is like night & day. Accept it as trait of your character: you are athletic. This is what you will tell people when they ask you what type of person you are.

At Golden Gloves Fitness, we are dedicated to make your fitness & boxing experience as profitable as possible. We make sure you progress and that you are fast on your feet and with your punches. At our gym we make you level up and at the same time we maintain a positive, welcoming and fun atmosphere to anybody who wishes to improve their fitness, boxing and overall health. We are located just north of Toronto, in Vaughan, and we are always looking forward to be seeing you here!

Boxing changed my Life

Boxing changed my life to the point I can almost say it revitalized it. Every time I finish my training, I find myself thinking and performing better. All the sweating and moving allowed me to get rid of all the negativity accumulated in my mind and body. Sometimes all I needed is a distraction from all the busy stuff I have going on and I couldn't find anything, that is until I discovered boxing.

It was hard at first, but then I realized that once I got into it, it really got easier from there. The worst part I found is actually missing days because it just made it harder to get back into it. So now I work out every other day. I let one day to heal my muscles and the next day I came back to the gym to continue my training. When I am back in the gym, I really can appreciate my progress and feel like I can continue building my mind, body and boxing skills.

As I grew throughout the weeks, the head coach Alex really helped me stay focused and most
importantly: excited. It is easy to loose track and fall off training but Alex made sure things were interesting and that I continued improving. This really made me feel like I could expect to learn something new, each and every time I came through those doors. I really needed things to be switched up and my coach understood this fact very well. There was never a dull day training which was very important to me. And there was always something to do or to spar with somebody.

Alex really helped me with my self-defense by strictly re-assuring me on how to keep my hands up. At first, I was dropping my fists when I was punching but soon afterwards I stopped doing that because I didn't want to hear: "Keep your hands up!" again from the coach. After I got my defense techniques down, Alex proceeded to show me how to be more on the offensive rather than on the defensive. He showed me how to not to lean forward but rather dodge punches, keep my distance and counter punch my partner effectively.

With the defensive & offensive techniques being down, we later learned how to become faster, stronger and better with our bodies as a whole. It seemed to me like cardio and some strength building played  important roles here and so closer to the end of my workouts I do some skipping rope, running and fast to faster movements around the bags. Alex really helped me with how to become quicker and at the same stronger with my punches. I also gotta mention that he really helps with how to punch on target. By the end of my workouts here I really feel like I gave it all I got, thanks Alex!

Closer to the end of my classes, I could say that I have fun training at this boxing gym here in Vaughan. But, at the same time there is a serious feel that is intended to make me improve my skills at a good speed. I definitely like the intense bag exercises and all the equipment that is there in place; just right for my training. Thanks a lot for making my workouts so doable and available. I really like it how this place is always ready when it comes to training. Indeed, there is never been a class that I did not walk away feeling better and learning something new. Overall, I do feel more fit and all I do  is tell myself: it was all worth it!

Quickness and Boxing

One of the most primary concerns when athletes come to our gym is quickness. They want to be quick on their feet and with their punches. And, they have come to the right place! But, boxing can help you with quickness in other spheres of life. Like what you may ask? Boxing will increase your quickness of thinking, healing, and over all reaction speed. In today's post we will discuss exactly how quickness overall is shown in the sport of Boxing.

First and foremost, indeed, boxing does make your punches and feet faster. Thus, increasing your
agility. After months of training you will be able to move quicker, respond faster and dodge punches more effectively. These skills can be applied to other disciplines, not just boxing. Quick movement allows you to dodge whatever life hurls at you and remain vigilante. At our gym in Vaughan we will show you how to be light on your feet and fast with your hands.

But how does boxing make me quicker?
Boxing makes you quicker by you wanting to be more competitive! By showing you how to align and balance your body. It allows flushes your body out through sweat and gets your lungs pumping air. Indeed, a lot of our gym goers do get out of breath. But, they get better by each and every day! As the saying goes: "sore today, stronger tomorrow".

Now let's get into the more mental side of things. Boxing literally allows you to move every muscle in your body and make every muscle sweat. This is still physical, but wait for it...the sweat takes out unwanted substances like fat, bad food, nicotine, etc out of your body that in turn will increase your circulation. This circulation streams into your brain. Since it is clean and fresh, your mind accepts it effectively and clearly. With better circulation, you will think better and then you can apply your newly fresh thoughts at work, at home and just in overall life in order to benefit you and achieve your goals.

Reaction time is crucial in boxing and in life. What slows you down? Bad substances such as poorly prepared food, sugar, pop, salt, and other extra substances that you do not need and that slow you down. At Golden Gloves Fitness, we are all about reducing reaction time and all about acting in time. We make sure that you know how to block without any extra arm extensions, move your feet quicker without any extra steps and how to move with agility. Our head coach Alex examines your reaction to punches and movements and adjusts you as you go along.

Healing. We haven't forgot about this important aspect when it comes to boxing. But, doesn't boxing mean that you get hurt? If you do it to train and you are being training professionally, the answer is no and if you do get hurt then something is wrong. Our coach Alex makes sure that you are training correctly with your partner. As for the healing, well, your body creates new, fresh tissue on top of the sweated out pours so that you can have in turn a new layer of muscle, skin and tone. If you have a scab, it will heal quicker due to the fitness you have acquired.

We definitely give advice in health, fitness and how to improve your overall self. Please, feel free to inquire our head coach about them at any time. Golden Gloves Fitness is more than a gym, it is a health and wellness center. We are here for you and we always keep it %100 at our sports gym located just north of Toronto. If you would like to get in touch or if you have any questions, please feel free by contact us today by clicking here for more information. We are always looking forward to be hearing from YOU and increasing your boxing & fitness abilities,

Movement, Agility & Boxing

The science of boxing is a lot like the science behind your body. The better you understand how your body works & moves, the better you will be at boxing. But, how can you understand your body better? Where to start? These are the first types of questions that come to mind to somebody who has not begun body building and following up by body improvement. Today's article is exactly about answering these questions.

Firstly, you want to begin by starting with the basics: your weight. Your body literally works-off
your weight. That's right, you might not realize it yet because you haven't started controlling your weight or you haven't gotten it to work for you, yet. Start by recording your weight and set the weight goal that you are looking for. Let's say your are 155 pounds and want to be 175. Literally, just gain 5 pounds, workout to get muscle density for the return of 8 pounds, then, you are all of the sudden: 163 pounds. The 3 extra pounds that you gained was from the workout and from the extra weight your body has to pull of the sudden.

Now, let's say you want to loose weight instead of gaining it. You should eat less meaty/ fatty foods and more vegetables and increase your exercise intake, including: running. By slimming down, there is less fat for your body work-off, therefore leading you to loosing weight even faster. Just as a recap: your body works-off the weight you have. At Golden Gloves Fitness, we are experts in weight classes. We also have an Ideal Protein clinic on 2nd floor for those who wish to control their weight on a whole new level. Once again, we are located in Vaughan, ON.

By controlling your weight, you become more aware of how your body moves and you also develop your agility at a faster rate. These new discoveries will allow you to become better at the sport of boxing. Moving fast is crucial in this sport, that is why you should focus on how fast your body reacts rather than appearing larger to intimidate your opponents. Like most boxers, you can see that their slim & fit rather than bulky with a lot of muscles. The reason for that being is because they sweat a lot more of the unwanted fat out than the average person!

So, the main message is: boxing is a great sport for weight control and overall movement improvement. You want to be fast on your feet and quick to react. And, at Golden Gloves Fitness, we are here to improve exactly that. Our head coach, Alex, is here for all of your fitness, boxing & wellness requests. At our gym in Vaughan, we are always here for YOU because we are your #1 stop for health & fitness. We are always looking forward to be training and seeing YOU, our enthusiastic gym goer. See  you HERE.

Why the cool-down period?

At Golden Gloves Fitness, we have procedures and policies that we carry out to make sure everyone’s workout feels complete. When you first walk in that door, we have you begin with a warm up by stretching and doing abdominal work and only then we have you training or proceeding to your more intense workout.  As a rule, you cannot start putting a lot of pressure onto your muscles without breaking that first sweat because it works as a lubricant for your muscles and bones and as a signal for your body to get ready for some serious intense training.

Once you are done with your training, you cannot terminate your exercising just yet. Not so fast! You must have a cool-down period before exiting that door. But, what is a cool-down period? And when should it happen? A cool down period are light exercises that do not include weights and are meant to calm you down, great cool-down practices are the following:

•    Skipping rope or a light jog (no more than 15 mins or 2 laps)
•    Abdominal work such as press or stomach squeezing
•    Stretching, including squats
•    Medicine ball exercises (make sure you take it lightly)

And other exercises that you deem acceptable as light, including light bags. If you are not sure which exercises are classified as cool-down, please feel free to ask our coach Alex or come by and workout

A final point we would like to mention is that always try have a fun atmosphere like we do here at our gym. It makes it more doable for you to achieve the fitness goals that your are always striving for. At Golden Gloves Fitness, we play music, change up exercises and over all have fun while we workout. So come by our fitness gym today to see how YOU can feel better.
At Golden Gloves Fitness we are always looking forward to be training YOU, our #1 champion.

at our gym in Vaughan and he will instruct you how to properly begin and wind down in your sessions. If you do not cool down properly or finish at heavy exercises such heavy bags or weights, you might experience irritation of muscles, bone cracking, and stiffness of the areas of the body that you worked out.

Boxing at Golden Gloves Fitness

I have been a passionate boxer throughout my life and I wanted to share my knowledge of this great sport with the rest of the world. I have opened Golden Gloves Fitness in Woodbridge, Ontario area in 2006 to serve people who wish to push their bodies beyond their limits and at the same taking in consideration their conditions, skills, and their approach to this discipline. For me, boxing is a science, a way of life, and a skill that always proved to be useful throughout my life. It is
useful because there are always results for the body and strengthening of the mind. After a great boxing session, I feel refreshed and ready to take on new challenges in my life. In the morning when I wake up, I feel good about the improvements of my body and I always note the tranquility boxing has brought to my mind.
When I start my class, I begin with a warm up by stretching the body for the first 15 minutes and then I proceed to the heavier exercises such as bag training and focus pads. After spending half an hour on the heavier proportion of the workout, the last 15 minutes are spent on cardio and abdominal excises to improve your endurance, agility, and breathing. These one hour classes are guaranteed to improve your body performance, leaving you with a new technique or skill to enjoy whenever you feel like working out. At Golden Gloves Fitness, your health and body shape is paramount to me. That is why my classes are taught 1-on-1 or in small groups of 2-3 people.
Other services are available at Golden Gloves Fitness in the Woodbridge area such as Tai-Chi, SAMBO, MMA, and body building. For more information please visit my website at: www.goldenglovesboxing.ca for rates, hours, and location (we are located by Jane and Hwy 7). If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me about the services offered at this location. I look forward to be hearing from you soon.
